Thursday 1st September 2011

Amber Ratcliffe shot a new course record at the "Meridian" to retain the East Region Ladies Championship. The Norfolk player shot 78 in the morning to trail leader Ashleigh Greenham (Essex) by four, with Daisy Dyer, Tracy Williamson and Charlotte Thompson in second on 75. Ratcliffe started the afternoon from the 10th and went on to birdie the 12th, 14th and 18th. A birdie at the fourth and an eagle at the 16th helped set a new course record of 69 for a total of 147. She said: The course was in excellent condition and the difference between the two rounds was that more putts dropped in the afternoon. Paige Kemp returned a second round 72 to finish second with 148, pipping Dyer on countback after she shot 73 in th afternoon. Greenham won the prize for the best gross score in the morning, and Essex's Gabriella Cowley shot the best gross in the afternoon with 73, beating Dyer and Karen Young on countback. Cathy Panton Lewis retains her title

This years tournament, was held 23rd - 25th August at the "Cambridge Meridian Golf club".
The field for the event had competitors coming from across the globe, as far away as the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Holland and the United Kingdom. Last years champion Cathy Panton Lewis returned to defend her title.

Day one, of this three day event, saw Cathy put in a good start to the competition and fight to retain the mantle of "Champion" but hot on her heels were Chris Langford (2009 winner) and Corrine Reybroeck (France). At the end of the first days play, the leaderboard had three Pro's leading the way with Cathy Panton Lewis on 75 and both Chris Langford and Corrine Reybroeck both on 77. Roz Adams lead the way for the amatuers with a 78 (77nett).

Day two, of the tournament, saw great golf being played and some brilliant scores being returned to the clubhouse. Again Cathy was putting in a sterling effort and it was beginning to show with a 6 stroke lead from her nearest rival Susan Moon (USA). At the end of the second days play Cathy remained at the top of  the leaderboard with a combined score of 148, Susan Moon in second place with 154 and Roz Adams in third place with 156 (on count back) from Chris Langford.

Day three, had a line up for a good days golf with the tournament still to play for. Unfortunately the weather wasn't to be on the players side with some very heavy downpours of rain during the day making play very differcult at times but everybody continued to complete the competition. Cathy had led the field from day one and day three wasn't going to be any different. She managed to complete her round with a score of 76 giving her a total score of 224 for the tournament, stretching her lead with 12 strokes from Susan Moon who came in with a score of 82, giving her a total score of 236 for the tournament. Roz Adams took third place with a total score of 238.

Overall the standard of golf was excellent, considering the weather conditions and a good spirit was felt around the club over the course of the tournament.
