Men Members

The Men’s Membership Section is very successful and is continuously growing, mainly due to the excellent all year round condition of the course along with the busy diary of competitions and welcoming, friendly atmosphere among the current members. Whether you’re a golfer looking to further your game or simply play and get involved in the section, you will enjoy your time here at Cambridge Meridian. With a season full of weekend and mid week competitions, friendly and scratch matches there is plenty of competitive and social golf available to play and get involved in. There is also a weekly ‘Swindle’ amongst the members played every weekend in a relaxed friendly format. Although playing golf on a Championship quality course is the main reason golfers choose to have their membership with us, there are also an array of social events, such as a monthly quiz, race nights and themed events which give added value and enjoyment during your membership with us.

Benefits of being a member include, a loyalty card, giving 10% discount on drinks and food for use in the clubhouse, advanced tee bookings, members only tee times before 10am at the weekend and reduced members guest rates and offers throughout the year. There are also several ‘away’ days and weekends throughout the year, whereby some of the members get together and play a different course and sometimes make a weekend out of it. One of the great things about the Men’s section is the friendly and relaxed atmosphere both on the golf course and in the clubhouse, you can be sure that you will enjoy a membership at Cambridge Meridian.

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN

The three Captains for 2012 took part in the traditional Captains Drive In on Sunday 22nd January. On a cold, blustery day and having played in the Stableford Competition won by Brian Woodward earilier. The three made their way to the 1st tee.

Watched by an enthusiastic crowd Junior Captain Robert Dyke led the way and belted the ball straight down the fairway as far as the eye could see. Not fair cried Senior Captain, Gary Swain who was next to go and also split the fairway albbeit not quite as far as Robert. Now it was the turn of Club Captain Andy Breacker, showing no sign of nerves he too split the fairway and all three walked off the tee happy with their lot. With the help of a range finder and two of the club Juniors the distances were measured at 138 yards for Gary, 208 yards for Andy and 278 yards for Robert.
The prizes of the Drive In distance raffle were won by Bill Liddle, Joe Mercer and Bill Heslop but more importantly £88 was raised for the Captains Fund.

Andy takes on the mantle

Andy Breacker has agreed to take on the mantle of Vice Captain. Andy will take over the position from Bob Boulton, who is stepping down from the role for personal reasons. We would like to take this time to thank Bob for all his hard work and support over the past 5 months. We are sure you will want to join us in wishing Andy all the best in the coming 7 months as the new Vice Captain.

Jock Stewart Trophy
Quarter Finals
Saturday 18th June 2011

The quarter final between Cambridge Meridian and Girton Golf Club were played at Girton on Saturday 18th June. The match proved to be a very tough game. The conditions of the course although windy were good but this was to be of no help to the Meridian team. The match remained fairly even between the teamsas they passed through the halfway mark dispite a slow start from Meridian. The match itself slowly turned in the home clubs favour during the early to mid part, of the back nine. Although the team were playing well with Meridian securing pars, Girton walked away with birdies on the same holes. With the damage done it meant that the top pairing of Dave Reid & Chris Drake secummed early to lose their match 4 & 3. However the final two matches were fairly even and it wasn't until the seventeenth when both Meridian pairs of Tony Merrion & Dave Cresser and Brian Whitelaw & Bob Boulton lose their matches 2 & 1, meaning that Girton won the match 3 : 0. Congratulations to Girton and well done to the Meridian Jock Stewart squad who again this season reached the latter stages of the competition.

Goddard Cup

Sunday 8th May saw "Cambridge Meridian" take on "Brampton" Golf club, in the Goddard Cup. Meridian fielded some of their best players, but it wasn't going to be a match, on the standard that Brampton fielded. The event took the format of Foursomes being being played in the morning and singles being played in the afternoon. The "Meridian" team which was captained by Dave Reid, were playing against some "Bramptons" best catagory 1 players but they put up an excellent fight throughout the whole day and can justifiably hold their heads up high.

The foursomes in the morning returned a 3 to 1 win to Brampton:
Ed Sandford & Johnny Wyndle winning their match.

The Singles in the afternoon faired a little better with a 6 to 2 win to Brampton:
Gubby Panasar winning his match and Johnny Wyndle & Manoj Patal halving theirs.

The final result on the day was a 9 to 3 win to Brampton.

Overall this was a brilliant test of their skills and resilience for the "Meridian" team but congratulations has to go to the Brampton team on the day for putting on such a good competition.

Dave and his team wish "Brampton" well in their next round of the competition.

Meridian Retains Ryder Cup

Sunday May 1st saw hosts Meridian Golf Club retain the Ryder Cup with a convincing 5 & half to 2 & half victory over local rivals RAF Lakenheath.
With home course advantage it was always going to be a hard task to the long hitters of the American Air base team as was proven on the day. This was the tenth meeting of the two sides with the next match being away at Lakenheath on Sunday the 18th September.
The home Captain's group consisting of past captains GB Wilson and Dave Reid won 5 and 4. Followed closely an hour later, (lol) by D Cresser and L O'Connor who won 2 and 1 with the two Meridian boys coming back from three hown helped by the fine chipping  in of O'Connor twice to break the Americans resolve.

S Allsopp with W Richardson helped Meridian too a 3 nothing lead and this quickly become 4 up and the trophy was retained with J Moody and W Wilson also winning.
Past Captain S Gedny and current Vice Captain B Boulton lost a close contest with the visitors winning on the 18th green. The following group of D Franks also a past Captain and Roger Harrison were also defeated as they were teamed against the Americans ace in the pack with the guests sinking 6 birdies between them.

Unfortunately for the Americans that was as close as it got when T Merrion and Toby Tye were also victorious.
The match was concluded when D Brown and late inclusion S Nutter halved the last match of the afternoon.
As usual the Americans were excellent company and provided us with their unique brand of humour both after and during the match.
It was left to finish the day with a sit down meal of Lizzies sausage pie and a drink or two too celebrate or commiserate the afternoons match.
Many thanks go out tho the staff of Meridian, the greens were great, the food superb which all went to make the day a successful event.

Many thanks to my team mates and I look forward to the September fixture.

Gary Wilson

Meridians dreams dashed.

Saturday 23rd April saw the "Meridians" dream of getting through to the next round of the "Derek Burridge" cup dashed, when our team was beaten at the first hurdle. The match, which was held at "Thorpewood" Golf Club and had 5 pairs playing from each club. The Meridian team consisted of Steve Gedny (Club Chairman) & Rob Dyke, Gubby Panesar & Andy Breacker, Pete Laughlin & Kieron Edwards, Vinnie Green & Tony Merrion, Mark Vaughan & Toby Tye.
The match was played in some of the hottest conditions seen so far this year. The course was in excellent condition and the greens proved to be a great advantage to the home team. The match result was a 4 - 1 defeat to the "Meridian" with only Toby Tye & Mark Vaughan securing a win for the "Meridian". This was a well fought match for the "Thorpewood" team and the "Meridian" wish them well in the next round.

Jai Patel wins the "Spring Cup" 2011
Sat & Sun
16th & 17th April

Sunday 17th saw the second day of this competition start off again in brilliant weather conditions. With some of the competitors chasing excellent first round scores, the game was on for some good golf to be played on day two. The overnight leaders were fighting to keep ahead of the field and this showed in the scorecards being returned in the clubhouse. The top four positions were so close they had too be decided on count back.
The overall winner of the competition with a nett 141 ocb was Jai Patel just pipping Terry Kennerson into second position again with a nett 141 ocb. Ali Saled took third position with a nett 143 ocb from John Moody in fourth position with a nett 143 ocb.

1st   J Patel            Rd 1 93(g) - 70(n)   Rd 2 94(g) - 71(n) = 187(g) 141(n) ocb
2nd  T Kennerson           83(g) - 68(n)            88(g) - 73(n) = 171(g) 141(n) ocb
3rd  A Sales                    87(g) - 74(n)            81(g) - 69(n) = 173(g) 143(n) ocb
4th  J Moody                  79(g) - 68(n)            86(g) - 75(n) = 167(g) 143(n) ocb

This really was a tight competition and all competitors have to be congratulated on their sterling efforts.

Saturday 16th April had the Spring Cup underway for the first days play. The weather and playing conditions were on the side of the golfer. Unfortunately this didn't prove too positive in the scores being returned to the clubhouse. With 2 nett 68's and an outstanding nett 88, leaving Jimmy Martin with some work to do on the second day, mean't there were some very varied scores for the first day. The leader for day one is Terry Kennerson with a nett 68(ocb), second place is John Moody with a nett 68 and Jay Patal in third place with nett 70. All are hoping to have a better game on day two and take the title of "Spring Cup" Champion 2011

Good Luck Boys

Cambridge Evening News up-date

Congratulations to all threeof our teams on getting through to the finals of the "Cambridge Evening News".
Harry Tteralli and his playing partner John Summers played some stunning golf over the past few weeks. Thier first round was played at Old Nene golf club (an interesting 9 hole course) where they beat a pair of hard hitting youngsters from Girton 4 and3. The game was played full of spirit and very good humoured. In the second round they beat a pair of older players from Heydon Grange golf club at Barkway golf club on Sunday 20th February. With the playing conditions being extremely wet and the course playing long the contest was going to be a tough one but they came through to win 6 and 4. Again the competition was played in the spirit of which its been formed and the pair enjoyed the company and the game with thier oppenents.

Our wishes go to all our teams who have got through to the final, John Summers & Harry Tteralli, Kevin Jacklin & Brian Woodward, Dave Cannon & Mick Saunders.
The finals will be played at St Ives on Saturday 26th March.
